Ricoh Cup First and Second Rounds
The Pro Pair Go Ricoh Cup 2001 started on December 2, 2000 at the TFT Hall in Koto ward, Tokyo. This championship is a festival of star players representing the Japanese pro Go circle. On the first day, total of eight pairs or 16 players survived the first and second rounds to advance to the quarterfinals. Among them were the teams which especially drew the attention of Go fans, including the pair of 4-dan Ms. Izumi Kobayashi and the 25th Honinbou Chikun and the pair of 8-dan Ms. Kazuko Sugiuchi and 9-dan Mr. Masao Kato. Both pairs won the two games straight. Also, many games were hotly contested and thrilled more than 700 spectators. The equipment newly introduced this year also added to the excitement in the hall. It seems that the pro pair Go is both nominally and virtually exploring a new field of the Go world.

Chief Judge Mr. Seigen Go Encourages the Players
In the Ricoh Cup, the late 9-dan Mr. Kaoru Iwamoto acted as the chief judge for the first time, followed by Meiyo Kisei Mr. Shuko Fujisawa. And 9-dan Mr. Seigen Go, who was appointed as their successor last year, acts as the chief judge again this year. Mr. Go was a leading figure in the Japanese pro Go circle during the Showa era (1926-1989). Already retired as a pro player, he is still pursuing the game of Go as the 21st century approaches. In his opening address, Mr. Go said, "Pair Go is the symbol of the development of the Go world toward the next century. I am happy to act as the chief judge of this tournament. I firmly believe that pair Go will become more and more prosperous." His speech was emphatic and encouraging, reflecting his devotion to the development of the Go circle. The opening of the Ricoh Cup was declared by him, "The last pair Go games in the 20th century (the first and second round games) start. Play fair and achieve your best results that will be appropriate for the upcoming century." The eight games of the first round began.
