Pair Go RICOH CUP 2006 ~リコー杯プロ棋士ペア碁選手権2006~
大会レポート Tournament Report

The commentator was Michael Redmond 9dan. The assistant was, same as the 1st day of the tournament, Akiko Tsukuda 4dan.
At the hall, all the game records of the 1st and 2nd games and the 9X9 board game were copied by Ricoh digital copy machine, Imagio Neo, and copies were free for people to take home. If you see a copy closely, there is a line under the women professionals played (numbers) and it is easy to recognize who placed the stones. This `underline’ which is used from the day is an idea of Mr. Hiroshi Hamada, a supreme advisor of Ricoh Co. Ltd., the sponsor of the tournament.
Also, there was a corner that you can print all the game records from the past tournaments, and that attracted enthusiastic fans.

Now, at the tournament hall, the audience was observing around the 4 games. The most popular game was a game of Yukari Umezawa 5dan and Cho 10dan pair against Izumi Kobayashi 6dan and Yamashita Tengen pair. Not only the popularity but also because they showed interesting development in their game, we couldn’t look away. Same as the 1st round, many stones of Umezawa and Cho pair were killed.
Redmond 9dan said, `Cho sensei always attack each other in Pair Go. Moreover, in large areas. And then, those large areas of stones die, most of the time.’
Tsukuda 4dan said, `For Umezawa san, it is her first time to pair with Cho sensei. So, she must be frightened.’

At the commentary hall, while the place was surrounded in laughter created by Redmond 9 dan’s clever talk, Yamashita Tengen seemed to play a bad move. And more and more, the development of the game was so interesting that we couldn’t look away.
